Tanzania - Maasai Country
The wide-ranging
Maasai (or Masai) tribe is
spread over northern Tanzania and
southern
Kenya.
They are rural nomadic people who herd animals--sheep, cows,
goats--and do not raise crops.
Their diet is mostly
milk, porridge, maize, beans and some meat.
Easily identified
by their deep red and bright blue garments, they nevertheless can often
be seen
in
towns ,
such as Arusha, dealing with merchants or chatting with friends.
Some of the younger tribefolks have become commercial making and selling
jewelry to tourists visiting
the famous Ngorongoro Crater wild animal reserve
which is in their territory.
Although the Tanzanian and Kenyan governments have instituted programs
to encourage the Maasai
to abandon their traditional
semi-nomadic lifestyle,
the people have clung to their age-old customs
