The gracious marble Spanish Steps, built between 1723 and 1726, leads down from the church of Trinita dei Monti to the Piazza di Spagna/Spanish Plaza  (so named for the Spanish embassy in the plaza).

The boat fountain Fontana della Barcaccia (Fountain of the Old Boat) at the bottom  of the steps was built a century earlier in 1626-29 by the Bernini family. 

The church of Trinita dei Monti interior contains masterwork paintings and frescos from the 16th century, some attributed to Daniele da Volterra (and his associates). 

On the Spanish Plaza, adjacent to the foot of the steps, is the modest house where the British romantic poets Shelley and Keats lived in the 18th century until Keats’ death (at the age of 25) from tuberculosis.

The house is now a museum of the poets and includes a charming library and the room where Keats died in 1821.
