Finally after 40 years of misrule and brutality Robert Mugabe was removed from office in November 2017. He was long accused by rights groups such as Amnesty International of violations of human rights. Zimbabwe is currently experiencing a hard currency shortage, which led to hyperinflation and chronic shortages in imported fuel and consumer goods. Mugabe’s critics blame his program of land reform. Laws passed in 2006 make any actions perceived as homosexual a criminal offense. The Zimbabwean government has made it a criminal offense for two people of the same sex to hold hands, hug, or kiss. The “sexual deviancy” law is one of 15 additions to Zimbabwe’s criminal code quietly passed in Parliament. Mugabe died September 6, 2019.
