The trade surplus is substantial, and foreign reserves are the world’s fifth largest as December 2007. Taiwan’s current GDP per capita is equal to the average of EU Countries. Taiwan is one of Asia’s most progressive countries as far as gay rights are concerned. On 24 May 2017, the Constitutional Court ruled that same-sex couples have the right to marry under the constitution and that the Legislature has two years to amend the marriage laws to align with the constitution. Tens of thousands attend the Taiwan Pride parade every year, making it the largest LGBT event in Asia.
