Warsaw’s population as of 2007 was estimated at 1,706,624, with a metropolitan area of approximately 3,350,000. It is the capital of Poland. Warsaw’s mixture of architectural styles reflects the turbulent history of the city and country. During World War II, Warsaw was razed to the ground by bombing raids and Nazi destruction. After liberation mass residential blocks were erected, with basic design typical of Eastern bloc countries.
More recently historic streets, buildings, and churches were restored to their original beauty and magnificence.
